It does depend on the roosters personality.I like my roosters big ones hate the small bantam he is nuts.The big ones Zeus and Spots are most docie.Dont mind being picked up and worked on.

They do lots of alarming and legit are always on watch out.If the hens dont see,they do,which then alerts me to scare the hawk away.
Not sure what they would if a hawk actually grabbed a hen.Thr lead roo has attacjed my dog and got her off a hen,but I have several hens who do the same,so roos are just here because their pets,hens can do the same thing they can.
 
I like having a roo around. I've had good ones and bad ones. The bad ones eventually push their luck too far and get culled, but I replace them with the next prospect. My current is probably a bit shy of a year old and has been great. He warns the girls of danger, isn't rough with them and his crow is just loud enough that I can faintly hear it in the house when the windows are closed. I consider that perfect. I like hearing it, but not at an obnoxious level. He also naturally stays out of my way. I'll occasionally walk towards him to make him run off, just to reinforce it, but he does it on his own anyway. If your situation allows one and you are willing to put forth the effort to find one that fits your needs, I see no reason not to have one, but I like having them so... A bit biased

I began with my first group of chickens this spring. It has turned out that five are roosters and two are hens. We have the chickens as pets and pest control. They do a great job of eating the ticks and bugs in our little woods. (We have donkeys that wander in there too and the ticks have been bad over the last few years.) They are all just hitting the 12 week mark. I love the personalities of our roosters. I love their strutting and their antics. But I've been having to consider what to do about a very lopsided ratio ... 2 hens: 5 roosters. My plan was to figure out which rooster I liked ... and to keep him with the 2 hens. But I kept finding I was liking the roosters the most. We're not looking for eggs... so the plan has shifted to trying our luck as a 'bachelor group'. Our two hens are going to our neighbour's farm down the road. And the five boys are going to try their luck here. Time will tell if this was a crazy choice!
 
I like some of mine... But one of them is terrified of me, but keeps following me around while considering attacking me. He also never fertilizes any eggs. All he does is crow and look cute.:barnie
