does anyone have finches or hatch finch eggs?

Hi i have a pair of finches and they have laid there 2nd lot off eggs the first ones didnt work they wouldnt go next to them bu tnow they have laid 5 eggs and have been on them for about 5 days the male finch seems to be doing most of the work is this normal? And also they have been fighting a but chaseing each other around the female doesnt realy seem as if shes too intreasted in the she will sit on them sometimes but not as much as the male tho. I did read the males mature faster than the females i candeld an egg and they seem to be working but do you think they will be ok once they hatch if the females not fully mature?
 
I don't know what kind of finches you have. If you are breeding Lady Gouldians, they are not great parents. Mine worked very hard on 3 eggs, and when one baby hatched, they tossed it out of the nest. I put it back, the next morning it had completely disappeared! I looked everywhere, no blood no baby, nothing.
Young birds may be more prone to make mistakes, inexperienced. If possible, take the eggs, and give them to a pair of Society Finches, thats what most do because they are excellent parents and will adopt eggs and chicks. Karen
 
My Java Rice Birds just hatched one of two eggs on Saturday! The male does most of he work and will chase his mate alot. Karen is right you can get Society finches to be your "Brood Hen" they love to hatch and raise babies. Young birds sometimes make excellent devoted parents, but sometimes it takes a few clutches before they get the hang of it.
I have never candled a finch egg. My gut reaction is you should not be handling their eggs.What kind of finches are they? You can always google and learn more. Is there a local Avian Club you can contact? They are as devoted to finches as the members of this board is to chickens. Good luck!
 
After the first finch hatched and disappeared, I did candle the other two eggs. They were empty, got tossed, I took the nest out to give the birds a break. I actually think the female gouldian was a bit depressed. I think next time I will let the Goldians lay and sit on the eggs, they were real good at that, and towards the end, let the societies take over.
 
I have zebra finches just the 2 i have looked at a few websites but they are not as usefull as people on here. I have noticed that the female has been siting on them a bit more today maby she just needs a bit of a break after laying the 5 eggs. I wasnt too keen on puting them in my incubator as i would have to be up every 40 mins feeding them and i dont realy have time for that so i might just leave them and see what i get il post pics if i get anything out of them.
 
Gav , I had simliar situation with my Zebra finch.the father does do most of the work........mine wasted probably a dozn eggs for no reason so it seemed, finally had a baby hatch and it died........they had two hatch....one died,one thrown out of nest..I put it back and it is now a teenager

Good luck with them........ just let it go its course. I cannot imagine hand feeding one , they are just so tiny ! Post pics for sure

I second Okiechick's advice. I was a member of an Avian club and do recall a member telling us how she handfed the baby finch with a toothpick!I believe it was the South Florida Cage Bird and Aviary Society. You can Google to see if it is still around. Those members loved their finches as much as we love our chickens.
 
I have noticed too , that my male does most of the work. Its like mama barely gets a chance to sit on the eggs. My goldian just started singing again, I might just put that nest back in there!
Society finches are cheap, it might be worth getting a pair to raise the eggs.
 
Iv had 3 hatch out of 5 today im hopeing the others will be tomorow the parents seem to be doing fine with them il send pics when i get chance to see them off the eggs i just took one but its not very good il try and get a better one tomorow.
