Hatch update!
The cute little spotted ones - got 29 out of 35 eggs. Pretty good, but surpassed by the eggs from msladyhawke -- out of 21 that made it to lockdown, every single one hatched! Had a basket full of little black and splash fuzzies this morning.

We are well on our way to establishing our flock of Barred Hollands, thanks to her.

I just wanted to share a couple pictures of my little Princess. She's a Brahma/Marans cross. I had no clue how she would look as she grew and feathered out. I'm in love with her feathering! The guy I bought my 4 BCM chicks off of just gave her to me. I think she's absolutely stunning and it's safe to say that whichever one of her parents was the marans was blue :)

Yes they are, and I hope to have a good size laying flock by this fall, with one pen full of these so that I can sell hatching eggs and chicks next spring. I'd love to see these in the local Agway next year with a sign about their rarity. People with backyard flocks might very sell select these if they had a local choice.

I just googled (what would we do with out it?!) barred Hollands..I LOVE barring...one day will have a barred rock, so beautiful..BUT NOW...the barring on these birds is so much more intense...They look just a tiny bit smaller...maybe it was the pics ...how are they compared to the barred rock? size, egg color and such...if you know

...which I am quite sure YOU do! hahaha

I don't know much more about them than you do if you've read what you can google. This is my first experience with them, but msladyhawke can say a lot more about them. I don't expect them to compare to leghorns or even barred rocks in their laying ability, if they come close, I'll be happy. From what I've read, they seem ideal for small flocks or free ranging. Since we need more people breeding them to get the breed stronger, they seem like a good choice for a white egg layer on the farm. They would also be perfect for creating blue egg laying sex-links if the hens are crossed to a black ameracauna. I think next year I may be producing blue hens that lay blue eggs that are sexable at hatch. The cockerels would be blue barred, and probably all of them will have the cute ear-muffs, even as chicks.

I got BIG plans!

awesome! Can't wait to see those 'ear-muff' guys!!! I will look up more info..these chickens are very nice looking and , if they lay at least as good as a wyandotte, who knows what the future holds

...
not sure bit I can't wait to find out

I'm guessing that it'll be a jumbo size egg though she's a BIG girl! Only 6 weeks old and you can see how big she is on my hands lol
jumbo!! cool...It is amazing the differences in egg sizes..even in the same breeds! I have a wyandotte (cordon bleu), she is still laying the smallest out of all..have to get a pic to show the obvious difference...even if the Marans eggs weren't dark brown, you would still know she laid it..it is very large..at least compared to the wyandottes..my bunch, besides the small one, are laying a medium egg...we didn't realize how much we would enjoy the marans egg!! Has been a wonderful experience to be able to have the variety, more will come ..i am sure

We definitely will need some pics of your girls egg!!

She's a beauty!

That wind is really picking up out there, I've got to get on top of my main run and retie some tarps. Will be taking my phone in case a 911 call is in order. Wish me luck!
