Heated Waterer Review / comments

I've got 5 of those waters, and have had no problems at all, if you fill from the plug like it says it doesn't fall apart, plus 3 gals of water will not ruin deep litter, unless your litter was not deep enough, just remove the wet spot, deep litter is very forgiving

watch those meatal bases they like to burn out quick

In an 8x8 coop 3 gal went alllll over unfortunately. I did try to fill with the plug and it still separated and came apart. But I am glad you have had good luck with them. It just didn't work out well at all for me.

I take a 25' roll of pipe heating tape and wrap my sturdy 7 gallon waterer. I just put a square of duct tape on the end down low by the spout and wrap my way up. Then I do a complete wrap to get tape on tape and move on with my life...

Here's my waterer. The base is a tin (I think caramel popcorn came in it eons ago. It has a 'classic' Coke Santa on the outside). It is about 15 inches tall. I fixed a ceramic light fixture into the centre of it (about 5 inches off the bottom) and drilled a small hole near the base through which I fed the cord.

There is a lid for the tin also. Then I cut the bottom out of a five gallon pail which fits over the tin. The tin plate you see fitted into the top of the pail is a printing plate from an old newsletter that I had printed in 1996.

The pail keeps sawdust away from the tin itself. Notice the cord coming out of the bottom. I cut a notch from the rim of the pail to fit the cord. And... because chickens will "pick" at stuff, I covered the cord for protection.

The actual waterer is one I use all year. It typically sits on an upside-down 3 1/2 gallon pail. You can see it in use in this photo.

So... today I emptied out all the old water (I usually clean it about once weekly ~ that's all it needs as it seldom gets dirt in it) and put in a different "sanitized" container. (In the summer I put 1/2 cup of ACV in the water to keep it healthy). The new, clean waterer is in place.

Best of all, it has not yet frozen on me, even though we have had night-time temperatures down to -10C (14F). There was a small skiff of ice on the top of the water in the bottle, but the water in the reservoir was fine.
