Silkie thread!

Pics
This is my first (and currently my only)Silkie. Her? name is Turk because she looks like Tarzan's little gorilla friend in the Disney movie.

She's almost 6 weeks old in these pics. Can someone please tell me what color she is/will be?

I have six developing Silkie eggs in the incubator right now so will hopefully have some buddies for Turk soon.

I have really fallen in love with Silkies - Turk has soooo much personality!

Okay Silkie Pros---got a question for you. Some of my Silkies have difficulty seeing because of their crests, some of my Silkies have difficulty breeding because of the fluff---is it better to "pluck" the feathers or "trim" them?
Or should I just "trim" the Silkies who won't be shown, and "pluck" the show birds because of feather regrowth?
I know I can't show a bird that has been plucked or trimmed, but I thought the plucked feathers might regrow by the Fall...

Help!!

Hi, I'm not a silkie pro but have talked to one. I was told to pluck the down from around the vent and that would help the roo to be able to service the hen. But I'm not as experienced as some other folks.

Here's some of my silkies.

I would definitely prefer to try AI than pluck/trim my breeders, but I've never done it before and looking at the video, I'd say its a 2-person job. Been trying to talk my husband into helping, but so far, I haven't been convincing enough....

I hope this is the right place to post this. I've done some searching but I still have some questions.

I would like to get my daughter a silkie for her birthday (June.)
We are relatively new to chickens but I've done a lot of research and feel like we have a pretty good set up.
We have a 6x10 open air coop/run and 6 standard size layers.

I have a few questions about integrating a silkie into our little flock.
1. Is it OK to put a silkie in with our 6 layers?
2. At what age can we introduce them?
3. She really wants a chick, but we can't have roosters. Are there any tricks to sexing little silkies?
I know, I'll end up getting 3, they'll all be pullets and we'll have to expand our coop (which I kinda want to do anyway.)

There can be lots of problems with introducing new chickens in with a flock that you already have started. Lots of info if you do a search on it. I tried to add some silkies with my big brown egg layers and had to get them out fast or they would have killed them I am pretty sure. They were sooooo mean and silkies have tender heads so if they get pecked hard it can cause bad problems or death.
There is no way to sex a silkie untill they are several months old.
Hope this helps a little.

What a sweet heart he looks like!!! I have 10 babies coming from her this week!!
Can't wait till they get here!! I love Vickies silkies!!
