How long was it before they realized she wasn't in the vehicle?
An older couple at the rest stop saw what happened, and let my daughter use their cell phone. She called, but mom didn't recognize the number, so she wouldn't answer. Daughter called me. I called my mom. For whatever reason, my mother goes really stupid when there is a "situation". She argued with me that my daughter was in the back seat sleeping, and I was trying to play a prank on her that wouldn't work. She hung up on me. I called her back, and we argued for about 15 minutes, but mom refused to buy into my prank, and look in the back seat. Finally I screamed "you f....ing idiot, look in the back seat". It shocked her, because I never, ever cussed, or talked to her like that. You should have heard her then. Oh My God, turn around, we left our granddaughter at the rest stop. My dad drove to the next exit, which was a good ways away, turned around, and they went back to pick her up. Took about 50 minutes for them to get back to her. The couple never left her. They waited until my parents got there to pick her up. Later, I asked my mom if she could remember even 1 instance where I had played a prank like that on her. She agreed it was out of character for me, and I had never played that kind of a prank on her, but her mind simply refused to accept that they might have actually left my granddaughter.
