Turkey Sexing *Pics*

This is the first time i've raised turkeys. Got eggs from a friend who said i could get Narragansett, Bourbon Red, Slate, and i think maybe Palm? Most all hatched on April 25th, so they're a little over two months old. The two youngest hatched on May 1st. We have 9 altogether.

i've seen some of them do the display stance. Now i'm noticing some of them are getting long, hanging down red skin under their neck. Would this indicate they're boys? Because, if so, i think i have mainly boys. Anyhow, if any of you turkey experts could look at my pics and let me know what you think, i would be most grateful.

Any insight or advice is appreciated. i'm actually really enjoying these guys. They are very sweet and gentle and make the cutest little sounds, no gobble-gobble yet.

well the bottom picture ... the blue slate doesn't look like a blue slate... mine are mainly grey and have white and black spots all over and black freckles on their legs. At about three months mine have a blueish tinge around their head. Yours appear to have brown in the feathering... or maybe the quality of the phono didn't come through?

Tom turkeys will puff up and fluff out thier tail feathers in that circle turkeys are so famous for... hens will do that occassionally but they are different in their fluffing.

Mine have been gobbling foe weeks... too funny!

In the Bourbon reds you have a tom and a hen. The toms color is always darker and the hens are lighter; and the toms start to have the reddened coloring to their head. Beautiful turkeys!

i'm a turkey novice, and the eggs came from someone who (i believe) let's them all hang out together. So maybe that bluish one is a mix with a blue slate and something else?

At this point, i'm 90% sure that i have 8 boys and that one Bourbon Red girl. Other than her, they are all displaying, with bright red hangy-down skin under their throats. i thought my curse of hatching 80-90% males was over.

Bourbon Red and Bronze are easy to sex when they get older. The Toms will have thin black edging on the feathers, it shows up first on the breast the hens will have white edging

Toms and hens both have waddles (flappy skin under their chins). That's not a real good clue with young birds. The bumps on the neck (caruncles) are usually bigger on males, and the snood (The bump on top of the nose) will get longer and hang down on the males. The turkey in the middle of the first picture looks like a tom slate cross bourbon red. You can see the snood elongating and the large caruncles at the base of the neck. I agree with Southern girl that the reds are a tom and a hen, but the red skin can come and go in seconds depending on their moods. But compare the snoods and caruncles. The narragansette in the fourth picture is a tough call, but I would guess tom.

In your last picture the bird in the back looks like the same slate X red as in the first picture. Tom maybe.

Try to get pictures from lower down on their level. Also, I'd love to see a better picture of the upper right turkey in the first photo, the dark one. It might be a bronze X red. I think it is also walking out of the last picture.

I have 14 turkeys this year, and I think only three are hens. What's with all the boys anyway?
