Hello,

I was getting ready to plant rye grass seed for this winter when I decided to do some quick research. I discovered that not all varieties of rye grass are recommended as forage for livestock. ("Livestock" didn't explicitly mention chickens, but moreso cows, horses.)

We live in South Carolina, and the recommended rye grasses for forage are Passerel Plus and Gulf Annual.

Has anyone planted a rye grass not recommended for forage and lost chickens? or planted the above rye varieties and had good/bad results?

Thanks!

Mine are often free range and eat certain grasses and weeds but leave others. I guess they know what not to eat as some are over 2 years old.

You do know that they will eat the seed if you let them on the newly planted area, right? They will also pull very young plants out and eat the whole thing.

You don't lose any birds with other varieties.
The ones recommended will simply grow best in your zone

Thanks! I have noticed that our chickens do eat some grasses/weeds but leaves others. I agree, ddawn, that chickens do seem to know what's best for them.
