Chocolate/Dun Silkies?

How is a chocolate colored silkie created? Or 'dun'--whichever you prefer. Do you have to bring in another breed?

I'm pretty sure that their aren't dun silkies... yet and I don't think that the dun gene is present in the silkie genome, I say this but it dawns on me that in Sonoran's signature line I do believe that their is "Khaki" in there which is splash of the dun gene I do believe

Not sure, but I have been wondering the same thing. Last spring my barred olive eggers were out ranging and I was cleaning out the silkie coop, and one black hen wandered off when i was not looking and was bred by my olive egger rooster. This is a pic of the resulting chick (the only one that ended up not pure silkie) and she is definitely not black. This is her, right next to her mom, who is definitely back. It is not burned out pre-molt old plumage. She just moulted. I have gotten non-black other birds in my olive egger pen, but people just say it is old moulting plumage. It isn't! It is some shade of brown that is not black. I don't know if it is dun or chocolate, because it is just showing up this year. Any input and thoughts appreciated. I am adding a pic of the non-black barred olive egger too, just to show the color is not black. These two non-black hens are half sisters, same daddy, mothers completely unrelated breeds.
I have her in the silkie pen. hoping to produce that color in silkie some day. Minus the silver and barring, of course, LOL.

I only say 'dun' because that is something I've seen tossed around. I thought it was just chocolate--which is what I want! Anyways...wasnt sure what everyone else calls them. I guess I should has phrased it: how do you create a chocolate silkie? My other question is what do you breed a chocolate to if you don't have a roo and hen? Just one or the other.
I suppose someone will get on here and enlighten us all!

You would breed to black. Chocolate and dun are both a variation of black. Best to keep the genetics as simple as you can, so go for really clean blacks if you can, not blues, no off colored hackles, hopefully black down as well. no white toes, or known recessives like lavender lurking in there.

Dun / Khaki is an incomplete dominant gene, similar to blue/black/splash.

well real chocolate is a recessive gene. Dun you could use OEGB for one or Sumatra. Those are a couple of breeds I either know or believe have dun. It would take alot of breeding!

This page says chocolate in orpingtons is sex-linked recessive, so I suppose we are both halfway right, LOL

You could cross a silkie with a chocolate/dun OEGB and then keep breeding back to get the silkie characteristics back. There were just some OEGB eggs in chocolate/dun listed recently on here. Good luck and sign me up for your waiting list for when you have hershey kiss silkies!!!

ETA- I think I read somwhere chocolate is a sex linked recessive.

I have chocolate silkies...... They of course aren't SQ.
