For me the one that kicked was a pullet.and like I said this can't be scientific.I have tried it as the chicks got older and got mixed results.I thought it was more for kicks and giggles, but I still do it

You know, the thing about wives' tales.....is that they're often based on something.  So unless science or personal experience proves me wrong, i can't completely count something out.  This is why i will try it, no matter how silly it sounds, and see if these particular wives knew what they were talking about.

I'll be interested in seeing your results. Easy way to prove or disprove, right? You already know who's who!

i done a test with the wing feather method with the last chicks my broody hatched but at this stage they are still too young to know if it was right. also tryed the pendulum method & got slightly different results with the same chicks. so time will tell for those results.
but i would be interested to see if this method does work.
i have also heard that holding them upside down by their feet works, hangs limp = pullet, pulls itself up = roo.

I am looking forward to doing this, but ya'll have to promise to be nice to me if my results show somebody's method to not work "100%" hide       (lau)

Raven81:  As far as the feather sexing method, I don't think it works for all chicks.  It has to be a special line, a special cross of lines, or something like that... hu

Currently 30 guineas & 49 chickens. Australorp, Buff Orpington, Barred Rock, Rhode Island Red, Easter Egger, Dark Cornish, Brown Leghorn, & American Gamefowl.

Raising 100% Grass-Fed Black Angus beef in the beautiful Missouri Ozarks. No grain, GMOs, antibiotics, or hormones. Lots of green grass and sunshine, the way beef is supposed to be raised.

I have two chicks in the brooder and I think I can tell which is what (1 pullet, 1 roo). The roo ran at our fingers when sticking them in the wire. The pullet just sat back. Plus, she's much smaller, almost half the size now after five weeks. Don't know if that's relevant.

Current breeds: Wyandottes (silver laced and BLR), Silkies (white, calico?, splash, blue, partridge), Marans x, Easter Eggers/Ameracaunas. Working on some Polish and Shamo. Hoping to start some projects next year...gotta get a new pen up!

Newly addicted to incubating.

Ok, I purchased runner ducks and the woman in the store said that if you hold the duck by it's feet and they curl up they are female. If they hang they are male. Well, I ended up with 4 males and 2 females so that theory goes out the window. Do you think this method would work on ducks???? Any one with ducks ever try it? I'm hatching some ducks by the end of the week and sure would like to know.

Ok, over the last few months and hatches I have tried this method. As much as I want to disbelieve it proves to work( for me) don't know why or how but it's been correct. For me if the chicks kick its a hen, if it's a roo it hangs. What were your results?
