New to chickens, can they be raised in Alaska????

So glad you made it!!! Sorry my greetings are a little late - haven't been online much.

I'm so glad you're enjoying Wasilla! I'll have to give you a call next time I get over there. It's usually winter when I get to the mainland. Too much going on in summer!

Hope you are settling in fine!

I did it, I ordered an incubator! My husband is gonna kill me!
But, now I get to hatch eggs, and then, since I can't keep them all, I can share them with you guys!

Yeah what's up with this weather? I know it was in the 80's and 90's when we left VA (too hot for me). I don't mind it so much at least we are here. The sqeeters are my ONLY peeve right now, but Deet helps, tho I hate chemical crap like that on me. I actually look forward to a white Christmas this year and all of the snow, but I'm sure people get tired of the snow after a while. It beats the rain tho for sure.

The valley is usually windier than most of the other areas. But we have a little bit of that "June Gloom" going on. It will warm up, no worries. But later in the fall, you'll start seeing the "termination dust" - snow in the higher elevations, and that signals the end of summer. The old-timers (Sourdoughs) say that when the fireweed blooms are gone, you only have about 3 weeks before winter. :|

I knew about the Valley being a little windier. So far that hasn't been an issue. I have lived in Montana before and that was WINDY. Washington also has bad wind storms in November, power got knocked out once a week every Nov.

Hey gotta a question I know most of us have interest in chickens here but I would love to where I could get some highland cattle. I have a big green meadow here and the house and the previous people have had cows and horses here before. I would love to put a few over there and put horses in the pasture but those are later. I know highlands handle the cold beautifully and are extremely self sustaining. Well if anyone knows please let me know!!! Thank you.
I have to get the pastures ready for horses but that will probably next Spring, needs lots of fence repairs. Oh I forgot to mention we live close to Santa.... hahahaha LOL. Actually there is a reindeer farm across the way from us. How cool.

dunno. Perhaps an inquiry on Craigslist would turn one up, if no one up there with you knows where to find them. I've not seen any here, and I'm not sure what type of cows there are in the fields close to me...Angus, maybe?
