Pics

Hi DC, Lawatt and everyone. I've been working on Ice Cream Bars, too using a blue Isbar roo X Cr. Legbar hens, then a black Isbar X CL hens. None of the chicks had the chipmunk stripes. Some are blue, most are dark. I don't know about y'alls, but of the 11 (8 girls 3 boys) there seems to be a 2nd way to sex them. The boys, whether dark or blue, have light beaks and legs. The dark boys are all barred. The girls have very dark beaks and legs. So far it's been 100% accurate. Here's a pic of some of them hanging around. I look forward to seeing more of everyone's ICB chicks. Is there a particular forum for ICBs??

My beautiful Isbar babies are a week old. While the picture isn't very good (and heaven knows, I tried), these are some of the prettiest, most robust looking chicks I have raised this year, despite a frustrating start.

I have Isbars hatching!

Hurray! for you KYTinpusher! How many hatched?
This breed needs more exposure.
I agree. It had lots of exposure but then many had problems getting good hatches. That's why Greenfire imported a third line of them. The earlier lines had possible suppressed immune systems from too much inbreeding.

I have chicks from parents of the first and second imports. Three of the 6 that hatched died, but the last 3 are doing great. I have to agree that there seems to be an issue with immunity. The person I got the eggs from keeps his birds in wire cages inside a barn so they won't be exposed to anything.

Me? Well... I want to give the birds the best chance possible but on the flip side I only want to keep and breed the strongest and healthiest. I hatched the eggs under a pair of broodies. I'm hoping at very least that I got 1 cockerel and 2 hens... but I should be so lucky. LOL!

I put 6 eggs in lockdown, out of 7 that were set. I guess my little cockerel couldn't catch all 4 girls the first day.

He must have caught the fourth one, though, because I have had 100% fertility since. 5 have hatched and the last one is zipping.

2 black, 2 splash and a blue so far. I have 3 more eggs in lockdown that were set 2 days after these.

Congrats.

I believe it's going to take a while before we overcome the "immunity deficient" problem completely. But it seems to me those that survive should contribute greatly to the vigor of the breed. It doesn't help to get eggs from 'breeders' that don't decently feed their birds, causing the chicks to have other deficiencies. Some times it's hard to tell what causes what, but it will all shake out in the end.

Yes, congrats on the hatching, KYTinpusher. Well done.

Those of us that are working on the autosexing part of Isbars, may also breed new vigor into the breed. Technically they won't be Isbars for many generations but once we are all done, we will have what Martin Silverudd did not not get to complete.
