Why do roosters crow?

In answer to the question how long will it be to know if I got a roo or a hen till crowing time?

I am a first time chicken keeper and here is my experience or the instantly transgendered chicken.

My "Cleo" just started crowing this week. ARGH! Cock, a Doodle, DOO!

: /

Her/His hatch date was March 5th, 2014.
Today is 6/17/204.
So 3 months and a week and "Cleo" turned out to be a "Leo".

At least with that name he still responds.
(I named 1 chicken, my son named the rest. Son wanted to name him Vader, but it doesn't rhyme with Cleo I explained.)

He is a beautiful black Ameraucana with cream colored "reverse" Colombian neck and a bit of splash throughout. Ameraucana are very difficult to sex I'm told and I was aware of this when I went to get chickens. His comb didn't even turn red until 2 weeks ago. He is taller, then my girls, but no spurs, has long tail feathers with that beautiful bottle green or purple sheen, he is bossy, but also defers to the ladies, he warns them of anything flying overhead or squirrels nearby and odd sounds or people coming. He is mild mannered, a bit skiddish and even chivalrous, always letting the girls eat first or enter/exit the coop before joining in. He even puts a wing over then when then want to hide. I really like him, but I live in the city, and as all of you backyard chicken keepers know: cityfolk neighbors don't take to kindly to a 15 minute crowing alarm without a snoozebar. :/

I am so sad to have to take him back to Chicken's Galore, I do love him. Aside from the crowing, he is a really good boy, a gentleman even. However, Russell, the owner of Chicken's Galore understands the situation, and is very cool, so we are going to do an "exchange". Hopefully there is a Barred Rock, Sexlink, Wellsummer, Delaware, Jersey Giant, RI Red, Production Red or Female Amerucana that can bear the moniker "Ashoka" in keeping with our Princess Leia, Queen Amidala and Padmé line of female star wars characters. Even our goldfish is named C3PO.

Wishing you "C"Luck with your Chicken mystery.

Kind Regards,

Koodra

The rooster is often portrayed as crowing at the break of dawn ("cock-a-doodle-doo") and will almost always start crowing before four months of age. Although it is possible for a hen to crow as well, crowing (together with hackles development) is one of the clearest signs of being a rooster. He can often be seen sitting on fence posts or other objects, where he crows to proclaim his territory. However, this idea is more romantic than real, as a rooster can and will crow at any time of the day. Some roosters are especially vociferous, crowing almost constantly, while others only crow a few times a day. These differences are dependent both upon the rooster's breed and individual personality. He has several other calls as well, and can cluck, similar to the hen. Roosters will occasionally make a patterned series of clucks to attract hens to a source of food, the same way a mother hen does for her chicks. (FYI = From Wiki) :)

They are saying-Hello Look at Me!!The happier my roos are, the more crowing you'll get. A rooster that doesn't crow is a rooster to be worried about.

Been reading this thread and laughing at some of the responses (I remember a neighbour complaining that one of our other neighbour's rooster crowed at 4am). but am glad to hear all the various responses and what the crow might mean. our rooster has just come of age and has been crowing several times a day, nice and loud. sometimes I think he's crowing just to hear the sound of his own voice since he has to deal with listening to 15 hens making noise and complaining when it's time to lay an egg. i do, however, enjoy egging the rooster on. I will go in the run and start crowing. he'll lift his head up, tilt it, and then let out the loudest crow possible as much to say "get with the program, this is how you do it!"

My hen started crowing when she entered "chicken menopause" after about seven years of laying eggs. Her hormones must have flip-flopped because she became more aggressive, too. She lived until she was twelve years old, and bless her heart (and gizzard), she started laying eggs again before she died. I don't know why roosters crow, but my little hen crowed because she was just happy to be alive!

So I live completely off the grid but I have neighbors with houses and during the day I can hear everyone else chickens hens and roosters making noise and all but at night they're quiet and mine squack and crow and are just always up making noise. Why?!?!!?!

Also from inside a house please somebody reassure me I'm not waking up my neighbors by them doing this all night.

Hi

I would suggest that there is probably something disturbing your birds to make them noisy at night. Lights, sounds and or predators or rats scrabbling about can all disturb them. Figuring out what it is and eliminating it is the way forward. I'm afraid I can't reassure you that they are not disturbing your neighbours. The only way to do that is to ask them and perhaps let them know that you are trying to fix the problem if it is disturbing them. Good luck sorting it.
