Hi! JUst got our sexlink hens and a young red roo, and were told the rooster was a Rhode Island Red. However, he is dark red with a little white in the feathers unferneath his neck when he fluffs, and he has white tail feathers that are speckled with some black. I haven't seen any pics of RI Reds with white on them. Does anyone have a guess what kind he may be or maybe a mix? Thanks...Marianne

Pictures would help.

RIR do not have white in them. At all. That's what I have been told.

You need to make 10 posts before you can upload pictures here, but if you have a photo sharing site like photobucket, you can share from there immediately.

i dont think you have to have 10 post to post a pic. i have seen several 1st time posters post pics incuding me although it me several different previews to get it right

Without a pic I can't say for sure, but he sounds an awful lot like one of our roosters (a red sexlink cross). I especially like my rooster because he's hen feathered, and I've never had a hen feathered rooster.

Thanks! I will try to get to the point where I can post his picture. He is really pretty. Blue, what does "hen feathered" mean? Can you post a pic of your rooster so I can compare? Our guy's coloring is that really glossy dark red, but the tail feathers are white with black speckling. They tail feathers stick up but they are not really long or drapey. Also, he hasn't started crowing yet but we have only had him for 4 days. I got the birds from a local man here in Roanoke that has a farm with chickens, ducks, geese, and emu.

Also, can anyone help with the sex-link business? What kind of cross is it usually? We have 6 hens and the one rooster. My hens are light orangey with some scattered white markings, and he simply said they were sex link. They are already very docile but we are working to make them less afraid of us. I will post a pic of them when I am able to figure out how.

It may be a sex link rooster from the description.

Sometimes some certain strains of OE would have that kind of description but from what the farmer said, sexlinks, then you have a sex link rooster.
