Inside (coop) space is about 5 square feet per chicken of floor space, not including the roost.

Run space is 13 sq.ft. per chicken

Free range is 100-150 sq. ft. per chicken.

Alice, Brucie and Lil Peep (Barred Plymough Rocks); Chico, Sandy and Pearlie (R.I. Reds); Esmerelda (Black Minorca) and Buttercup (Buff Orpington).

I have 24 square feet per chicken.  Love my set up!

I answered based on inside space, which is 4-6 depending on which coop. But the outside space is at least 25...some get to free range, and some have a fenced 1/4-1/2 acre.

11 square foot in the coop

No outside run

3 acres in the day. Hmm I don't know how many square feet that is.

Then I have another coop where they have 7.5 a bird

and one more where they have 8.8

Well they aren't actually different coops but, I have one large coop that has different rooms in it. :0)

Currently :

in 8x8 coop there are 6 birds and in 4x6 coop there are 4 birds

We have a run for the large coop that is 10x12 (120 sq ft) and for the small coop one that is 6x10 (60 sq ft).

I have 8 bittie babies in the brooder so the run must expand.

We are adding on a 5x20 area to the run so 100 more sq ft for the large coop.

Total run space for the large coop will be 220 sq ft. So nearly 16 sq ft in the run.

That means my coop will be full at aprox 4 sq ft in the coop for the birds.

I am also making a pergola over the garden and a chicken tunnel for the birds so they will have limited access to the garden as well.

Also re doing the inside of the 8x8 so the nest boxes are external and adding another long perch.

4 sq ft inside

15 sq ft secure run

1600 f range

Can I have more?  We have 25, only planned on 12... Spring is getting to me - I want chicks!

Ive never cottoned to the 4 sq ft rule. I always went with to old free range practices of the early 20th century.

They went with 500 birds/acre or 87.12 ft2/bird. This is the maximum number of birds you can have on a plot of land, without overwhelming the lands own ability to process their waste.
