Dogs with Seizures and Vaccinations

I wanted to write about my Lyla because I believe her story might help another dog. In January of 2011 at age 5 she had her vaccinations in one vet visit: Lepto, Lyme and the 4 way parvo, distemper cocktail. Then 4 weeks later Lyla had her first grand mal seizure. Then she had two more seizures two weeks later in a twenty-four hour period and was put on Phenobarbital and Thyroxine.

Then she had no seizures for a year.

In December of 2011 she had her vaccines again. This time she had the Lyme vaccine in one vet visit and three weeks later I brought her back for the Lepto. Turns out that the Lepto vaccine she had last year was discontinued by the manufacturer because it was causing bad reactions in some dogs. The new Lepto vaccine was supposed to be safer.

Then 5 weeks after the Lepto vaccine Lyla had a seizure. Since then she has been having seizures every 4 - 5 weeks like clockwork. My vet just started her on Potassium Bromide to go with the Pheno...we'll see if that helps.

I don't know for sure if one of the vaccines caused the seizures and neither does my vet. But he can't rule it out either. So if you have a dog that has seizures for the first time even a month or more after being vaccinated please talk to your vet about what the dog really needs for vaccines. The only vaccines Lyla is going to have from now on are Rabies and Lyme. And both only after a titer to determine if she really needs them.

Here is Lyla this morning...still chasing deer in the woods...epilepsy hasn't slowed her down! I just wish I could have stopped her from getting sick in the first place.

I no longer immunize against lepto because of adverse reactions and the fact that the incidence of the disease is so minimal. I immunize pups, booster at 9 months and 18 months, and that is the end of their vaccination, except for rabies vacc. Gambling? Maybe, but I have kept my dogs healthy with this regimen. There are far too many problems with the Lyme vaccine so I no longer utilize this product. I think that we tend to over vaccinate our dogs.

Vaccines really should only be given if its absolutely necessary. Modern vaccines really are known to cause neurological damage.

Most vaccines these days have adjuvants which are chemicals designed to irritate the immune system. Many vaccines made today also contain Thimerosal, which is a mercury-containing preservative. Mercury is a nerotoxin.

Am I against Vaccines? No, But I treat Vaccines just like X-Rays. If there is a medical emergency they are fine. But taking them for every minor thing is asking for trouble.

Im sorry for your dog. My parents had a dog that had regular seizures and he did very well for a long time. He would feel them coming and would crawl by my fathers feet just before seizing. One day he had a bad one and it altered his personality. He was never the same. Not mean, but very off and flighty. They put him down soon after because his odd behavior became very disruptive.

Thank you both...I wish that I had known all this about vaccines before. Lyla does that too! I will be sitting at my desk and she will crawl underneath onto my legs and sit on my feet when she is going to have a seizure. How long did your parents dog do okay? Years...I hope years.

It couldn't hurt to give your dog the homeopathic remedy, Thuja Occidentalis, after every vaccination. The breeder/veterinarian that I got my dog from recommends using Thuja to prevent vaccinosis.

They had max for years. He was a rescue dog that had been having seizures since before they got him. Its my opinion that the really big seizure caused a hemorrhage or perhaps a stroke. Funny, but now that I think about it, I'm reminded about the nodding disease they have in Africa. I read an article on it. Children begin having strange seizures with repetitive behavior and each time they seize they suffer slight brain damage. Over time their personality alters and and they become zombie like and just shuffle around blankly until they loose even the ability to walk. Some people think it vaccines, some think blood parasite found in the local river. The funny thing is that the seizures are triggered by eating certain foods. My thought is that perhaps some vaccine damage has caused an allergy that triggers the seizures. That brings to mind something you said earlier. You say your dogs seizures are like clockwork. Do a little thinking. Take notes of the dates you do certain things like his heart worm pills or spray the house for bugs. or round up spray the lawn. You might find a pattern. and in that pattern find the trigger.


Goggle around a bit. There are good articles written by doctors about how certain vaccines are causing neuro damage.

Just a few thoughts.

im another who practices limited vaccinations thanks to seeing many reactions when working as a vet asist.

i dont give lepto or lymes ever, and i reccomend against bordatella too
puppies get shots at 8, 12 and 16 weeks, then booster at 1yr
Rabies i push back as close to 6 months old as possible, booster at 1 yr later and then 3 yearly after that ONLY because its required by law.

ive been running titers randomly on the dogs through the past few years and thus far all comming back good, no need to re-vaccinate on any of the dogs or cats (the oldest being 9 now and hasnt had any shots other than his rabies since he was 2 yrs old)

Too many people just assume because the vet reccomends it it MUST be safe or needed thats simply not true.

I have NEVER vaccinated against Lepto for that reason. In fact, all I have done is the whole puppy series, then a booster at a year and no more ever. I titer every three years to be sure, but thats all I do. Too many vaccines of any kind can cause side effects over time.
