Easter Eggers-What breeds do YOU prefer to cross your Ameraucanas with?

Thread Starter

I just bought a pair of true Ameraucanas last month that I'm very excited about. I've hatched a couple of chicks and hope that they do well, so I can sell some of those chicks later on.

Right now, I'm getting a lot of requests for Easter Egger chicks. I have some adult hens already that I've used, but have no idea what crosses were used to produce them since they were from a hatchery.
I would like to create some crosses of my own and would really like to see what the chicks may grow up to look like using certain purebred hens.

The hens that I have are:
Buff Orpington
Blue Andalusian
Blue Marans (this cross would produce an olive egger, right?)
Speckled Sussex
Barred Rock

Also, has anyone used a certain breed to achieve beardless Easter Eggers? I bought a beardless EE last month that lays a green egg and I believe she was from a Ameraucana hen and a Jungle Fowl X roo. She is beautiful, but I don't have a Jungle Fowl roo to create more like her.

If anyone can help me out with photos, I would really appreciate it!  If you post any, please be sure to post what the parents were too.

THANKS!

Which color Ameraucanas do you have? I have blue, black and splash. When I had a Barred Rock rooster, I made plenty of Barred EEs. Some had beards, some did not. Some had yellow legs, some had white skin. ALL laid green eggs, some were bluish green, some a light olive green.

Now, I have a Delaware rooster over the main flock so I make Delaweggers with my Ameraucanas as well as with my Easter Egger hens. Some end up with single combs and lay tan eggs, but the pea combed ones lay nice green ones.

Here is a blue barred EE out of a Blue Ameraucana hen with a Barred Rock sire:

Forgot to mention that both my hen and roo are blue. I purchased them from "6littlechickies".

Very nice EE, Speckledhen!

what i have read is crossing ameruacanas or araucanas with EE's is unpredictable or even crossing EE with other chciken

what is a good idea is to cross your pure americuana with a pure good egg layer

like a leghorn

and to get good eggs make sure the leghorn or other is a roo and amaricuana is a girl

teh male gene carries the egg quantity

also peacomb and blue egg gene go hand in hand so any off pring with single comb can be anything from white to light blue eggs

where as teh peacomb will defo be light to dark light blue eggs [slight lighter shade of the amerucanan blue egg]

crossing with maran will give olive egger and crossing with RIR or similar brwon egg will give green egger

If you use your AM roo with barred hens you will have sex linked EE and they may or may not be bearded.  If you cross with a brown egg layer you might get green eggs.  And all of those hens could produce EE without beards.  I have loads of beardless EE.... I am breeding toward all having beards and muffs now. I have an AM roo over all my EE, but they are mostly Blue and Black and what I like about EE is all the unpredictable colors.  Cross them with your EE.... Cross them with any, but remember most people who want EE want a blue/green egg and you might get just brown with most of those hens.  It is a crap shot.....

I have only have a bantam barred rock hen, but I do have some cuckoo marans pullets that are about 8 weeks old. I'll be crossing them with the blue AM roo when they are old enough for olive eggers.

Have you tried this cross before? I would love to see some pictures. I do know where I can get a lavender AM roo if they still have him. I also may get some bantam AM lavs and then I could breed him to these bantam hens that I have-barred rock, black australorp and EE.

I didn't know that...very interesting! Anyone have more pictures?

Some of the EE chicks that I hatch (from the hatchery EE's that I have already), I can tell almost exactly which hen was the mother, so there must be something to the color patterns. On the EE bragger thread, lots of people said how they have EE's that look exactly like theirs. Pretty interesting!

I do a Leghorn Cross all the time.  I don't think it really make a difference whether you us a pullet or roo for the cross.  They will get genes from both parents.... like olive eggers do.

In my siggy is my Super Blue Egg Layers and there are pics of mine if you want to look.
