Why is she acting like that?

I'm still new to this, so any input would be helpful. So I have been raising a hen and a rooster for about 5-6 months and they are probably 6-7 months old. Today I woke up to my hen cawing non-stop, walking around frantically and continuously pecking on the outside glass door. In the time I have raised her, she has never behaved like this and is still yet to lay eggs. So I separated her from the rooster, put her in a box filled with grass shavings because I think she may be about to lay eggs. Has anyone else experienced this? If so did I do the right thing? Is she about to lay eggs? Is this classical behaviour before laying eggs?

I was going to say that they get vocal when they are ready to lay their first egg. But she beat me to it.

Congrats!

Thank you. I heard that some hens get vocal after they lay their egg but she was quiet. It wasn't until I took her out of the box she started getting vocal. But once she got outside both my hen and rooster looked much happier to see each other and have been frolicking around the backyard the whole day :)

I have a Dominique who makes some of the most horrible noises before laying. DH jokes that she is saying, "I need to lay an egg...DON'T LOOK AT ME!! I need to lay an egg...DON'T LOOK AT ME!!!"

When my girls started laying, the BSL would stand outside the box when an other pullet was laying an egg. She'd sing the egg song before and after every egg she laid, she'd sing the egg song before and after any one else laid an egg, she'd sing the egg song if she was even thinking about laying an egg, and she'd sing the egg song if the rest of the girls got out of her sight. Amazing how some girls can make it such a community event. I have one EE who will stand outside the nest while her buddy lays an egg then she will climb in the nest for a little while and cuddle with the egg.

Yes at the moment I have only a black sex link hen and an amber/red sex link rooster. But tomorrow I'm hoping to purchase 2 more and add them to the flock :)
