Hi All,

I have a BO rooster, 4 years old, free ranging, deep litter method, layer pellets and fresh water daily.

I have noticed this spring that my rooster, Roy has declined in his crowing frequency.
Is this normal or a symptom of a problem or just common in aging roosters?

He crowns a few times in the morning when they are still in the coop.
After I let them out he is silent most of the day. Every now and again he will
let a crow loose but for the most part you would hardly know that i have a rooster.

Thanks

Just be thankful- many roosters crow WAY TOO OFTEN! :) sorry though, I don't know the reason. My six year old doesn't crow much, but I guess he never really has...

Thanks, I know that a constantly crowing rooster can be annoying. I just don't want to be
Too thankful unless it is normal for him to decline in frequency as they age. I love to hear my rooster crow, would miss it if he slows down too much.

I had black Australorp/Amerucana mix rooster that lived 13 years and he crowed up til the day he died. The only time he would ever slow down is if it were really dark or cold. So basically wintertime lol - or if he was depressed because a hen died. He would mourn her for a bit then get over it and crow up a storm again. Any hens die?

Nope, all my hens are in healthy shape. I have 16 girls so he has plenty to keep him busy or entertained.

He did crow a bit this morning, so maybe he was just going through a phase or something.

He appears healthy, they get fresh water, fresh food and they free range in my fenced in backyard, so I don't know what would
make him decline in crowing. he runs around, talks to the girls and hunts for them but just does not crow as much.

could be season changes, it is just starting to get HOT here after a really cold winter, so maybe that is it.

As long as it is normal for them to take breaks from crowing I am fine. I just wanted to make sure I was not overreacting.

Here are some pics of my flock and their backyard ranging area, in case it helps.
thanks
