Rare chicken breeds desired for their meat qualities?

DCchicken I saw on another thread you have Gunkei. Just wondering how they turned out. They look like miniature meat birds to me.
Sadly they died as chicks. I had a bad outbreak of coccidiosis which I did not catch for a couple of days. I lost all of my Yamato Gunkei and all but one of my Alsteirers.

I guess this reminds me to give people the warning. Many of the imported breeds do not have immunity to the bugs we have here in U.S. You need to practice extra careful brooder maintenance with them.

That's a shame. I lost 3 of my 5. Don't know what to. The 2 I have left seem strong thus far. I have 3 altsterier that are doing very well but I'm not interested in keeping them. It seems nobody but me is interested in rare breeds in my area. I'm hoping to sell my extra chicks at a tailgate (livestock sell and swap) at the end of September . Not sure if I want to keep my gunkei as I don't know much about them.

DCchicken, 15 breeds? hmm, egg bird breeds have to go bye bye if you have excess. JMO.

Alsteriers
Arkansas Blue
Ayam Cemani
Bielefelder
Barnevelder
Birchen Marans
Bresse
Cream Legbar
Hedemora
Isbars
Marsh Daisy
Swedish Flower Hens
Sulmtalers (Blue Wheaten, Gold Duckwing)
Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen)
English Orpingtons LF (Blue/Black/Splash, True Black, Buff, Cuckoo, Lavender Cuckoo, Lavender, Chocolate, Silver Laced, Gold Laced, Jubilee, Partridge, Red, Red Cuckoo, and White)

How would I narrow this breed list down?

And let's not forget my project breeds:

CreamBiele (Cream Legbar x Bielefelder) an autosexing Olive Egger
Bresse x Cream Legbar (Blue egg laying Bresse with crests and blue feet)
IceCreamBar (Cream Legbar x Isbar) - also know as the Autosexing Isbar
Smithies - a $5 black meat bird

Yep, just as I suspected, too many egg layers! Tee Hee. OMG>you are on your own. You need a bigger ranch and more property. Maryland is not a big enough state for you. Know wonder theres a shortage of chickens, you have them all!

Tell me about it. 5 acres used to seem like enough land.

What I need is some help taking care of them. It's probably easier just to narrow down my focus.

Hmm, expecting to hatch out some cucou de Malines/Mechels eggs in the spring. I have a few project breeds I will be working on myself as well. I have just acquired Golden cuckoo marans, barnevelders, and sussex. May improve on the marans and sussex by cross breeding with malines traits. Do you want to trade for some malines eggs? :love

Send me a PM in the Spring. By then I may have narrowed the breeds. :(
