PVC Pipe Feeder?

I,be made my feeder a week ago at first thought it was brilliant. I went away for a few days and asked family to keep an eye on them. They did,not have to worry about food because of new feeder. Came home everything great topped up feeder next day food everywhere. I did,nt know this happen when I was away as well but theirs such a mess what did I do wrong or is everyone's feeder like this. Its a PVC pipe with a y bend topped up last night notting in it this morning all on ground. Put stopper on bottom so they can feed off ground first so it make cleaning easier. Any ideas

Extend the feed area with a short section of pipe... I'm guessing that the feed is too close to the opening, so they do not need to actually stick their head into the pipe to eat... What prevents them from throwing the food everywhere in these designs is the fact that they are forced to put their head relatively deep inside the pipe when they eat, thus preventing them from thrashing food everywhere...

Thanks I,all try and sort that out today because its some waste of food I have and they, the ment to be cheap to keep and I don't want to be feeding the wildlife as well. The reason the pipe is short is I thought the Dutch bantam would,nt reach. Sure I,all give it a shot.
