If you want eggs, hens are important. If you want chicks, flock protectors, etc., roosters are important. If you want meat, they both taste just like chicken.

In my personal opinion, it's not even close. Hens are typically less aggressive, fight less, can be kept in large numbers together, don't create problems with annoying crowing, and lay eggs. Who could ask for anything more?

I like the crowing, unless there are 20 or more singing all at once. So I don't find the crowing annoying.
Barking dogs, lawn mowers, weed eaters, roofers, train whistles and teens car stereos are all louder and are annoying.
When I'm in my house, I can't hear the roosters crowing but I can hear the train 2 miles away and the cranked up car stereos going by shake the house.

I worked in a suburb of the capitol of Costa Rica and had to be at work early. Roosters were everywhere and I never once needed to set my alarm clock. I found a rooster crow to be a much nicer way to waken than an annoying alarm clock.
