6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Yeah, she's going strong, I can't even tell her from the others anymore, well except for 1 of the original 5. Her legs are splayed out a bit as if her hips are out of joint. She walks around with a wobble but as for mobility, she seems to have very little trouble. One other concern with her though is lethargy. I picked her up earlier and she didn't make a sound or try to escape or anything. The others have a fit at first but then quickly settle down. But she didn't do anything, she's also like that in the brooder too.

I'm afraid we may be back down to 6 if she doesn't come around.

They often stress the legs--get some vitamins in the chick. If it can stand and eat it should be ok.

Okay so I've had one little guy who is zipped maybe a quarter of the way and hasn't made any progress in a couple hours. How do I know if it is stuck?

We have 6 littles and 4 still trying hard. Set 16: 4 infertile 1 quit day 6 or 7. 11 went to lockdown. One egg shows nothing at all. The hatch chicks played a mean game of egg bowling before taken out of bator and I saw no pips on that egg. Guessing it died during lockdown. Hoping these last four kinda hurry. I'm loving the little buggers

I agree, patience. :) i had my whole family urging me to help my chick out alllll day yesterday because it had been pipped for about a day. i kept telling them let it be. It takes time. And low and behold i woke up to a bouncing baby this morning lol with 4 more pipping :D

I too have found that when I help chicks 2 out of 3 have to be culled (which is not fun.) They are usually weaker and leg problems. Not Always but a lot. Also my late hatchers often have problems too. I do not help anymore. I let nature do its thing.....
Again not always but very often.

This is very true!

Yes, they do better if they hatch on their own.

Thank you for the advice!!! Here is the update on the previous page...the chick ended up doing it all himself!

This is the one I have been fretting about that pipped on the wrong end of the middle. Started to unzip around 11am, took around 30-40 minutes...did it all by himself. I'm glad I held off on helping.

Now he is just drying in the incubator. Running laps around my mini. Toppled over the one egg I had in a carton and hugging both eggs that are with him. Peeping up a storm. I don't any of the peeping is coming from the other eggs yet.

Here is a photo...looks like a blue!!!

Thank You to EVERYONE who held my hand and tolerated all my questions and panic on our first hatch!!!

(I don't think the questions and hand holding is done yet though, as I got two more eggs...)

And an updated photo of the blue fuzz butt drying out...
