We are looking to get a puppy soon and needing recommendations for a good breed with the chickens. We are looking into getting a dog that stays small and not wanting something that will attack the chickens. Also looking to get a puppy which I think would help raising it with the chickens.
Any recommendations??

Thanks!

I think Australian Cattle Dogs are quite nice. We have one, excellent with the chickens, and she was not raised with them. Very good farm dog. Wants to please the master. Stays on the smaller side of the dog realm. Intelligent, which is very important. Absolutely perfect recall on our dog. Cons would be that they aren't so great with strangers, not to say they are bad, but they aren't like a Golden or a Lab (hey stranger! I don't know but I like you!) ACD are pretty good shedders. Our dog is a very good flock guardian.

I would suggest a Aussie.( Australian Shepherd) Though it is about a medium sized dog, it would probably be the best. If your looking for a dog that stays truly small I would suggest a Minature Goldendoodle.(A cross between a Golden Retreiver, and a Miniature Poodle.)

you need to narrow it down a bit more - what do you mean by "small"

no breed of dog is going to magically be good with chickens. Much more will depend on the personality of the individual dog and their level of prey drive. An adult dog that has been raised around livestock is actually a much better predictor of a dog that is ok with chickens. Puppies are too much of a crap shoot when it comes to seeing how they will react to prey animals as they grow. Not to mention all of the rebellious teenage pushing the boundary phases that all pups go through
