Yesterday I drove into my driveway and was greeted with piles of feathers and the bodies of several of my chickens. I am devastated! I have had my girls for two years and they are wonderful! About a week before I saw a large pile of dog excrement in the pasture to the side of the chicken house and I should have set up watch then. To have some irresponsible pet owners allow their dogs to come onto MY property - literally in my front yard and massacre my chickens for the fun of it is infuriating to me!! I was a mess yesterday as we picked up what was left and disposed of them. I only had 6 hens to begin with and the dogs killed 4. We live on 30 acres and don't really have stray dogs because of the proximity to major roadways, so I know that they belong to someone who thinks its ok to let their dogs run wild. I am SO ANGRY! I will be waiting and watching for these dogs and I WILL GET RID OF THEM. I know our laws here in Texas. I want the stupid owners to feel as much pain as I do. However, anyone who lets their dogs run loose obviously does not care about their pets in the way that I care about mine, so it probably won't bother them when their dogs don't return. The good old 22 is waiting for these POS dogs - I'm not shooting to injure, I'm shooting to kill. My chickens weren't hurting anyone! I am going to miss them so much - everywhere I went, they followed behind!

Sorry for your loss. But when you kill it, be more humane. Even though it killed your chickens, who taught it run wild and do what it wants? Only go for headshots to take it out the quickest and less painful. As much as I feel bad for your chickens, I feel bad for the dog having to get brought up this way.

Many dog owners do think letting their dogs run wild is fine. These folks also believe it is *your* responsibility to protect your animals from theirs. And that it is *your* fault if something bad happens.
I agree that it is not the dog's fault. Nor is it the coyote's fault and I would deal with either of them the same way.

I'm so sorry you had to lose your chickens in such a manner. I've been in the same situation. I felt the same way. Such a way to die. It surely does suck.

That's really crappy but I applaud you for bein willing to deal with it. People who let dogs roam really irk me, I have a friend who lives a couple hours away now but he gets mad at people all the time for saying something to him when his dogs are on their property, he says they won't hurt anyone so what's the big deal, he is always with them outside but refuses to leash them and he does live in the country but he has no concept of not everyone likes large dogs running around their yard, besides possible issues with livestock and other dogs some people are afraid of dogs and have good reason to not want them around.

So sorry for your loss! The dog owner is responsible for damages, if you can figure out who it is. Contact Animal Control if possible to file a report. I'd worry about only wounding a big dog with a 22; maybe more fire power? Good luck! The dog will return for your other birds; be ready! Mary

Sorry for your losses. It's the worst part about chicken keeping. Same thing happened to me and my birds a few years ago. My neighbors dog got into my yard and killed a few and badly wounded others, most of which had to be put down. I caught the dog in the act. Ironically, my neighbors also have chickens, so you would think they would have been smart about it. I gave them a bill for our losses, and they insisted that it was half my fault because the dog got under my fence, which is in good repair. This dog moved logs and cinderblocks from their fence line and dug under. Totally my fault, right?! Anyway, I gave them the bill, they said they were not responsible for my damages. I called animal control, made a report and told them next time their dog won't be going home. It will die in my yard or it will be taken to animal control. Days later they paid me about half of what they owed me. The dog has not gotten into my yard since. I think I scared them straight. But if he does, he is taking a little ride and they can pay to get him out. That is if he doesn't meet his maker in my yard.

Good luck, hope you are able to resolve your situation.
