Baby boys got a sweet heart.

My roo is an indoor pet, he goes everywhere with me (well everywhere that its legal to take him.) He was my little accident and up until now he has had no interest in other chickens, his flock has consisted of me, my fiance and a cat. The cat role has been filled by a number of cats, but most recently we adopted an old tom who was so sweet he put up with the most ridicules **** from Chicken-Butt. Well Kitty was old and he disappeared about a month back, he didn't like strangers and steered clear of moving cars so I'm guessing he crawled into a lava tube or a bush and did what old cats do.

Well after the cat disappeared he wouldn't eat properly, and he would stand in front of the cat door for hours some times in the dark. Recently the improper eating led to an ear infection and wry neck, which has been reminded. The one bright spot, is that a friend of ours has a hen that Chicken-Butt has taken a shine to. They got into one big knock down drag out brawl then they were fine.


The aftermath... He bleed everywhere!

Now our friend is moving, and he can't take the hen with him. She's such a sweet baby, a bit bossy but Chicken-Butt is an only child and I think he needs a bossy lady. I've been wanting to get him a real girlfriend for years, my fiance has resisted the idea. He was afraid that getting Butt a girlfriend would make him less cuddly and less our baby, not something I ever worried about. And after seeing Butt with the little brown hen my fiances exact words were this. "Look at them! Aww he loves her already. She's going to need a nappy if she's going to come home with us." And he's right, look at that!

So I made her a nappy, a temporary nest box and she's comming home tomorrow. Poor Chicken-Butt didn't understand why I was making a nappy that wasn't for him!


It should fit, if not its easy to adjust.

Thanks! I'll just be glad when we're all out of our kitty funk, I was hoping that after some time he'd you know forget. But he still stands by the door waiting fro the cat. Hopefully the excitement of having another chicken that he actually likes will break him out of it. I've seen it happen with dogs and cats, hopefully birds are the same way.

Princess and Chicken-Butt are happily sleeping in their cage and Princess seems to be settling in quite well.

I think Princess Hen will help Chicken-Butt Roo. It is really touching that your roo missed the cat so much. I have read other stories of how chickens can really get attached to a sole companion and suffer when that companion dies. That's why I am concerned when a chicken only has one companion. You might want think about adopting another mellow cat who likes to hang around the house as an additional friend.

I would love to see more photos of the darling pair.

I'm curious... as an indoor chicken, Chicken-Butt has had a lot of exposure to mirrors. How does he respond to his reflection?

As far as a second companion is concerned we are still looking for a kitty, but finding a mellow mouser is difficult. And in Hawaii you need a mouser, not to mention Chicken-Butt will run roughshod over any cat not willing to stand up to him so it's a balance. Plus my fiance and I hand raised Chicken-Butt, as far as he knows we are just funny looking chickens.

Now mirrors, he loves them. We usualy have one at the foot of the bed which he "plays" with in the morning then he will stand next to it through out the day while we work. Teaching Chicken Princess to play and get morning cuddles is going to be an interesting endeavor since she is fully grown. But I think once she realizes she doesn't have to forage all the time she will adapt, though I do have foraging toys for her to play with and I expect she will still spend a lot of time foraging.

Everything is still scary and weird at the moment, and the nappy I put together doesn't quite fit so todays endeavor is going to be making the nappy fit so she can free range. I can't wait for her to settle in so excited. I'll make sure to post more pics later today.

Okay she's been nappied! I'll get some better pics later, right now shes still adjusting to the indignity! And I'm getting in 'trouble' for wanting to mommy her too much!

Chicken-butt sounds like a little character. Of course he regards you two as part of his flock, so you are his companions as well.

I have a little rooster who spends the night in a pet crate in the garage, and I got him a 4 x 6 inch mirror that is a few feet from his crate. When he comes out in the morning he likes to strut back an forth and peck the ground in front of it. So he is responding to the mirror kind of like another rooster rather than recognizing it as his own reflection.

Princess is a cute hen. I'm sure she will adjust soon.

He is a character, part of that may be the brain damage he suffered before hatching, but he's a sweet baby. And Princess is aptly named, she's already pretty well adjusted to her new situation. We took them for out side time and had he leashed, she only strained at it once. I'm thinking she'll be leash free in a couple of days, right now she is discovering all the yummy things on the floor.
