Sharpies are great for marking eggs!

Some people get worried about the chemicals of the sharpie going into the egg. I'm not sure how true it is, but I've used it before with zero issues.

The chemicals evaporate quickly are not around too long. I have heard similar thoughts about fingernail polish to seal cracks in hatching egg but it does not seem to hurt the chick either

I think that by day 7 you should be able to see veining if your light is bright enough.

Edited to add - I set my eggs today, so I will candle daily and make notes.

Finally saw some veining today... set a week ago last Thursday so 10 days? Huh. Had a few that were definitely clears and an early quitter. I am hoping for at least a trio?

I forget who it was, but someone on here did an experiment by covering several eggs entirely in sharpie. They hatched without issues.

So I'm new to this page trying to figure it out, but this makes me excited I have incubator full about to hatch tomorrow!! yay!! I'll be plenty ready to hatch by then, this sounds cool! I was really hoping to get some Brahma eggs or quail. Guinea or turkey before I set up again, if not I'll use some of my girls ,we'll see!! Yes I'm a hatch addict!

It's that time again! Every year, hundreds of members come together to set eggs to hatch on the exact same day - the day BEFORE Easter. As a group last year, we had 2,156 eggs set for hatching! If you are new to hatching, this is a great way to get a lot of help, tips and advice. Join in the fun for the largest BYC Hatch-a-long of the year!


Set Chicken eggs on Saturday, March 21st at Noon (whatever time zone you are in)
