I agree. Heated water is the best solution. We usually have a week of 20below and have tried a few different methods. Right now we have an insulated coop with no heat other than water.

Our worst luck was actually when we heated the coop. They were fine with the heat, however, the power went out and they were not used to the cold.
 
I made a cookie tin heater for my waterer, it is yet to be tested in temps below zero Fahrenheit .
But so far it worked good.
People have had concerns with this method, so I made mine more complex and thought out.
More weight, and it allows excess water to exit the tin.
