I'm new at this. First time hatching in the incubator. I'm not sure what to do. First one had died. Second one beak is out but still see the yolk and veins around it. Worried about it suffocating to I cleared the nostrils. Don't know what to do & don't want to lose another one.

What day of incubation are you on? There are good articles on here about assisted hatching. I think you can find them on the sticky threads, or search in the search bar.

Is the duckling yawning or making chewing motions with its beak? If so that’s a sign it’s still absorbing the yolk

I had a duckling I had to assist a bit last year. He had blood vessels visible so I had to wait until the blood vessels retreated, and then I would remove a bit more shell, stop when I saw blood vessels. Then resume when those vessels disappeared.

You should read these but don't do anything until the blood vessels and yoke sack are gone (clearing the nostrils is fine)

I know this one is about call ducks but it should still be helpful (I mean you might be hatching calls I don't know)

Good luck

Yes, how is the baby now?

What everyone said above is right, do not assist any further until those veins and yolk are absorbed.

Also, is this baby pipped at the small end, away from the air cell??

Yes the baby pipped from the wrong end. Both eggs did. Yes I tried helping by breaking only where the egg sac was located. Just to make a safe hole. Incubation period was Unfortunately poor thing didn't make it. I didn't try to help any further than clearing the nostrils as I was waiting for the yolk & veins to get absorbed
Did the lil one make it out ok? :fl
The pattern of shell breakage is unususal- did you try to help this one?
Unfortunately no. Yes I did assist but only to make a safety hole in the air sac. The fist egg pipped 3 days prior & at that point the incubation period had reached 30 days.

Poor baby didn't make it 😢. I followed through not assisting as I waited for the yolk & veins to be absorbed. The only thing I did was clear out the nostrils just so the airway was clear.

Yes both eggs pipped at the wrong end. Would you be able to tell me as to why that happened?
