Whoa. Time to put down my phone. I was curious about them because nearly every hatchery website touts them as "rare", etc. Then I found BYC and started to do some real research. I'm interestrd in helping to preserve a heritage or otherwise special breed, the Ultimate Dream. Eventually. I didn't know what to look for in this breed. Thank you for your answers.

Also, because of our chat, I think I've just become more serious about knowing genetics. I love this place.

If you breed Splash roo to Black Copper hen do you get all Blue Copper or all Straight Blue or a mixture of both? Thanks in advance for replies.

you will get 100% blue coppers there is a copper in the mix. all the chicks will carry the genes for copper Marans.

Figured I would get the best answer here with the experts...
This hen was sold as a black maran 8 month old.
She seems to be coming out of molt and new feathers have a purple sheen.
She has not laid yet for me so egg color is unknown

Is she indeed a Maran?

the purple sheen show the presence of the mahogany gene. she is most likely a copper and not just black. she looks like a Marans....the egg will tell you more. does she have feathered legs what color are the soles of her feet?
