building a coop - newbie

Hi all. I am new and am asking for a chicken coop as a present for my 40th b-day/ 10 yr wedding anniversary in Jan. I have been researching coop plans, have someone that can build one. I would like 2-3 chickens. So, here are some newbie questions:

1) Where is the best place for the coop? We have a fenced in back yard, and I have found a shady spot that does not get too wet. What else should I look for?

2) How much room do 2-3 chickens need in a run? We will let them out daily in the back yard but do not want them to roam freely while we are away.

I think you are on the right track for the placement for your coop, but would like to mention that you might also consider wind direction and close neighbors are a big factor also.
