Kathy you just saved me from a major panic! I have an early hatched (20 day) chick around 24 hours old that hatched with an external yolk sac. I think that mama hen must have pecked it off and eaten it, because a couple of hours later there was just a dried scab on the chick's belly, and no sac to be seen in the nest. I just took the chick out of the nest to give it a few drops of sugar water (seeing as I don't know how much yolk it has absorbed and mama is still sitting on the other eggs that have started to pip) and it pooped on the towel. Of course I panicked, because the poop is bright green, but your photo seems to show it as normal. Whew! Thanks once again BYC!
Was this determined to normal or not? I have seen some red in one of my new chicks poo on occasion. It seemed very thick and kind of almost stringy. I was thinking it was not blood just shed intestinal lining? I am curious to know as I lost a bird to cocci recently and I don't want to get the new ones off to a bad start. I am using medicated chick started and some probiotic/electrolyte once a week or so.ok kathy....you know me always super paranoid about me birdies....here is what i found when i added some food just five minutes ago...most of the poo looks like normal poo but then there is like a light brown poo lately...some of which is this and then the end of it looks like normal poo...wish i had a pick...but the one that concerns me is this pic...here are the birds...they are all lively....and they run around eat and drink like crazy so i might be overreacting but can never be to safe
should i be worried....all they get for feed is medicated chick starter...also i think they could be eating the pine shavings...could this be a reason...?
The whole book can be found here:That's an excellent page Kathy. Thanks for sharing it. It's worth clicking on the link too - although the document is not purely dedicated to chickens it has a huge amount of useful information that applies to all birds.
Not sure what's going on with my hen but this is her poops lately.... She is still eating and drinking but not much. She's 3 years old
