BYC Poo Page - Warning, Pictures

hi all. this is pixie a 1 year old red sex link. A little over a month ago she came down with sour crop. she came through it thanks to info on this web page. She has had diarrhea ever since. She has a slightly squishy belly, her crop is fine now. She is acting very normal, except that she has diarrhea, isnt laying, and like i said has a slightly squishy belly. I am researching water belly, but am not 100% sold on the idea of that that might be what is going on. So here i am on this awesome thread thanks to Kathy, to see if any of you have any ideas. The pic of the poo: it is in front of my gate right next to the rose bush, so she didnt eat and poo out the rose petals, nor the dog hair. But i did find in there bits of undigested grasses, a few pieces of grit/gravel, and some oyster shell. I also found very very small pieces of what look like shiny green stones, which look like glass, but arent. I have no idea what they would be. My girls have access to their feed (Layena layer with omega 3 mixed with BOSS and cracked corn and diotomaceous (Spelling?) earth ) water, bare ground, and my lawn all day. They get kitchen scraps daily (Mostly raw vegetables, then left over seed from my parakeets, and sometimes bits of left over salmon. they are able to scratch around the base of my compost pile (It stays covered with a tarp). the pic of her vent: i picked her up and she squirmed a bit and farted, the little white string of poop that you see is what came out when she did. THe temperatures have been up to the 80's (But mostly 60-70's) with a lot of rain (Praise God!) i checked her last week internally for egg binding, and nothing was found(Kathy helped me through that!). I regularly check externally for it. So my question is, is she slowly on the up-rise from sour crop? or is there something else going on? when i say slightly squishy belly, her belly is proportionate to her weight (4.12 lbs) but is squishy and has been that way for weeks. where as my other hens are quite firm. thanks for reading and for helping this newbie.

Normal poop from a chick that just hatched:

Once it starts eating I will post those pictures.

Kathy you just saved me from a major panic! I have an early hatched (20 day) chick around 24 hours old that hatched with an external yolk sac. I think that mama hen must have pecked it off and eaten it, because a couple of hours later there was just a dried scab on the chick's belly, and no sac to be seen in the nest. I just took the chick out of the nest to give it a few drops of sugar water (seeing as I don't know how much yolk it has absorbed and mama is still sitting on the other eggs that have started to pip) and it pooped on the towel. Of course I panicked, because the poop is bright green, but your photo seems to show it as normal. Whew! Thanks once again BYC!

ok kathy....you know me always super paranoid about me birdies....here is what i found when i added some food just five minutes ago...most of the poo looks like normal poo but then there is like a light brown poo lately...some of which is this and then the end of it looks like normal poo...wish i had a pick...but the one that concerns me is this pic...here are the birds...they are all lively....and they run around eat and drink like crazy so i might be overreacting but can never be to safe
should i be worried....all they get for feed is medicated chick starter...also i think they could be eating the pine shavings...could this be a reason...?
Was this determined to normal or not? I have seen some red in one of my new chicks poo on occasion. It seemed very thick and kind of almost stringy. I was thinking it was not blood just shed intestinal lining? I am curious to know as I lost a bird to cocci recently and I don't want to get the new ones off to a bad start. I am using medicated chick started and some probiotic/electrolyte once a week or so.

That's an excellent page Kathy. Thanks for sharing it. It's worth clicking on the link too - although the document is not purely dedicated to chickens it has a huge amount of useful information that applies to all birds.

Not sure what's going on with my hen but this is her poops lately.... She is still eating and drinking but not much. She's 3 years old

Can you take a poop sample to a vet and have them check for coccidia, worms, bacteria and yeast?
If not, you might want to consider treating for coccidia and worms, and maybe blackhead and bacteria.
