I have a question - has anyone ever taken their roos to La Quail farms in Sun Valley - to butcher? Yelp seems to have people horrified at the conditions out there, but I just want them to kill and clean some roos - as long as that room is clean, I don't really care about the rest of the farm. Anyone have an opinion?

Thanks!

Hey there!

How's everyone doing with the rain? My run is a stinking vat of sucking, squelching mud. I've got a tarp up but the wind just blows it right in. Plus the coop and run are at the bottom of a hill (to keep them away from neighbors) which is FINE 99.999% of the time but because la nina turned el nino...Well, you've all been swimming in it too.

Anyway, out of desperation I threw some redwood bark in there. Same stuff I used around the house before I got rain gutters and they enjoyed kicking it into pathways and out of where it was supposed to be. No dyes, no wood, just bark, so I haven't had any cases of splinters or bumblefoot. I think it'll attract flea and such long term but short term to provide a non squelching substrate, it seems like a good idea.

What's everyone else doing?

Yup, I'm letting the old Christmas tree dry out in there as well.

My birds are too spoiled to even think of getting their feetsies wet. All mine are inside a 100% covered area so no water. BUT I do have one leak that I CAN'T FIND and its making me INSANE! ;)
They have an 18ft square covered patio with pavers on the ground. BUT the run & cages in there are ALL off the ground. I made "sand boxes" for the floors of both cages and runs.

Wow! There was a restaurant down here that had a setup like that for their massive flock of budgies. It was an L shape around the outside of part of the building (obviously an old patio they enclosed) and you could sit at one of the "view tables" to watch the birds. No idea if the food was any good but I loved going there as a kid!

As you may already know, we built a patio roof over our newest coop which is great for collecting eggs under cover. But like you say, the wind sprays the rain in sideways so we've had to tarp the open run and it keeps some of the dampness out. The main thing is that the deluge downpours are kept out of the run/coop because of the roofed patio. Half the slab floor is mildly damp but so far no pools or puddles. Rain gutters make a big difference on the patio roof. When it rains just once during the day and the sun comes out like it did yesterday, we let the 3 chickens out of the run - they have a raised dry dust-bath under the pop-up canopy in the yard. But when it pours on-and-off all day we keep them locked up under the patio in a 4x8 area because I don't relish giving baths to 3 muddy hens all in the same day -- they are all breeds with heavily feathered feet!

I know what you mean about going nuts about a leak! After getting our house a new roof there was a leak in the kitchen ceiling and for 3 years if we got rain our general contractor went nuts trying to fix it. He finally just sub-contracted a regular roof specialist to come out and fix it. No leaks this year - fixed just in time!

Years ago animals and birds were more kindly looked upon. Nowadays, in a turn-around, authorities are pushing their weight in paranoid fashion not allowing animals anywhere near food establishments - yet they don't seem to have any qualms about eating them!

Thats zackly how I set up this! Because of the big tree I wrapped the run on 2 sides and inside there are more cages w/ 2nd floor coops for bedtime. YUP so muych fun to play with them in there safely. I also have a dust box for them :love
