Meat! My family never had Katahdins, but we had other kinds of hair sheep; black bellies and, more recently, the flashy and positively gorgeous Painted Desert sheep. Wooly sheep have this godawful disgusting flavor in their meat that no amount of spices can overcome. Just the smell makes me want to vomit - the first time I cooked with lamb meat, I thought it had gone bad and threw it away. It wasn't until my third time cooking it that I realized it was supposed to have that nauseating, rancid smell. The meat from hair sheep, on the other hand, is magnitudes better. It smells like meat instead of garbage, and tastes so much better. A lot of people also raise painted desert rams for game ranches. Their horns make impressive mounts.Wow, that's good. So with the Katahdins, what is their purpose if they don't have to be sheared? Milk? Or are they just pets?
