Chicken Breed Focus - Faverolles

I have 3 Faverolles and two of them are roos! They hatched in early April and have a very calm temperament. Is there anyone in my area that would like one? (located in central Virginia, but can possibly meet west or east of RVA) I would love to find a good home for one, or maybe both.

My focus is on Leghorns, but when we ordered our Leghorn chicks from Murray McMurray, I showed my wife pics of the Salmons, she fell in love with them, so we ordered a quad.We breed parrots as a hobby and we have our Salmons inside the parrot enclosure areas, since from the get-go, we noticed that they were not as pushy and calmer during feeding time than the Legorns.
I have to say that these chickens are by far the sweetest, most docile, most friendly, the most amusing and entertaining to watch chickens we have.
Besides their feed they also enjoy any treats that the parrots; being messy eaters; drop to the ground. The hens are starting to lay eggs and we couldn't be happier with them. The rooster is a gentleman he's never aggressive but he's always been vigilant of his girls, especially when we carry one of them.
There's even one female that will follow me and stand on top of my boot as I am spreading out the feed to the the chickens.
A+++!
Great starter birds for anyone especially children as they are very approachable and not flighty.

they came!!!!!!
had to post an update.

This is by far the best breed of chicken I have ever owned. I loved my silkies and my cochin bantams, but I have never been more attached to chickens than my faverolles. They are so so friendly, and hilarious to watch. And absolutely gorgeous. They aren’t even fully grown and are beautiful chickens.

I have 7 hens and 1 rooster (I had ordered 6 hens and a rooster, the hatchery threw in a freebie!) all happy and healthy. Shoutout to Cackle Hatchery.

If you are on the fence about this breed, get them right now. If you love keeping chickens as pets, lap chickens if you will, this is the one. I couldn’t be happier. I have dreamed of having some for so long and they are everything I wanted. This is the ultimate pet chicken.

The beautiful black one is my rooster, Oscar. He is a sweet boy 💛

I love my Faverolles. I think they are a very quirky, strange chicken, but they are so sweet. Faverolles waddle when they walk due to their fluffy feathers and fifth toe. They are very docile chickens. They have feathered legs, a beard, and muffs. My Fav, Babs, went broody occasionally and made a great mother to some chicks I slipped under her when she was broody one night. When I checked on her in the morning, she had brought the chicks out in the run and was teaching them how to scratch and eat. She gathered them under her wings and protected them from the other chickens (and me). Babs was very talkative, I'm not sure if this is a Faverolle thing or just her thing. Sadly, I lost Babs (and most of my other chickens) to a raccoon this spring, so I had to have another Faverolle. I got new chicks and made sure that I had another Faverolle in with the order.

Adding a disclaimer :). My birds are the Australian branch of the family so may not reflect the breed in the U.S. Was kinda cool to see our colonel featured up the top there :)

We have three from a breeder and they are definitely my favourites personality wise. We got them at 11 weeks old and they had never been handled or had more human contact than having food and water changed in a grow out pen but it only took a week of determined effort and they were eating out of our hands and sitting on knees.

We have one which is everyone's favourite that helps you garden (ie sits on spade when you try to dig) and stands each morning waiting for her personal handful of scratch mix while the others run off after the thrown stuff. She just likes being with you (she is the one on the knee and arm in the baby photos). But the other two are also very quiet and can be picked up easily.

I have found they tend to be more susceptible to breathing issues such as reacting to dust or the dust from wood shavings.

They aren't the greatest layers, I probably average 3 eggs a week when they are laying well and can go all winter with none. They also go broody quite easily, normally it seems as soon as they get back up to 3 eggs a week sigh lol. Our eggs are on the smaller side with mine laying around a 55g egg in their second year, I'm hoping they might hit 60g when they start laying again in the spring.

I would recommend them 100% if you are after pets and eggs are a bonus but not if eggs are your first priority. As much as I love them I'm starting to increase my flock with australorps just so we get a more regular egg supply. They are a must have as part of a family with kids backyard flock for friendliness though.

The black in the beard is dirt btw, it molted clean again :)

And their baby photos. We had had them about two weeks here. Their muffs and tails had been plucked by the other breed in the grow out pen with them.

This thread hasn't been touched in over a year, so I'm waking it up! We are starting our chicken ownership with 4 fav chicks and 4 australorps. I fell in love with the descriptions of faverolles personalities and their fluffiness, the australorps were added in for egg production and because I'd heard they were more laid back so less likely to pick on the faverolles girls 😉 They are just hatchery birds, ordered through our local feed store, but at 5 weeks old I am already in love!! They talk quite a bit when I pick them up for brooder cleaning or for field trips outside, but they are also the first to come up and say hello 💕 I tried not to pick favorites, but my lightest faverolles, Acorn, is making it tough. She is the first to come say hello every time I visit and hops up in my lap when I sit with them. Pumpkin, our darkest girl, seems to gravitate towards my 2.5 year old, and Patty Pan, our "runt", is always making a big fuss over human interaction, but still wants to be involved in everything we do. These girls are full of personality, I'm just swooning!! Pictured is Acorn, of course 🥰
