Colorado Shooting - How horrible!

My doctor felt that I was dealing with a lot of anxiety, so he prescribed Zoloft. I agreed to try it and within a week I was a zombie. He convinced me to cut the dose in half and it wasn't that bad, but after a month or so, when it had taken full effect, I found that I couldn't do my usual word games on my Kindle. I was missing words like cat and dog and I was on a very light dose. My point is that when people with a mental illness are medicated, their quality of life can be diminished so greatly that they will often stop the medicine because it is better to deal with the symptoms rather than the cure. All too often, the medical community is more concerned with curing the symptoms rather than finding the cause.
The same goes for most meds that effect the mind. Most people that have seizures hate taking there meds cause they turn then in to zombies. For many the Seizures are easier to take... Doctors on the other hand with threaten people to make them take the meds which makes the issue even worse.

My cousin is a schizophrenic and he "snapped", so to speak, when he and my aunt came for a visit. He went from being my cousin Jim, normal in every way, to someone who was absolutely terrified that the mafia was out to kill him. It was very frightening to see the transformation that took place over a couple of days. Eventually my aunt had to have the police come and arrest him which got him detained and committed until he could be diagnosed. When medicated, he is like a zombie, and he needs to be medicated or the paranoia comes back and he is liable to do anything.

I am sorry about your cousin, paranoid schizophrenic is one of the more dangerous types and he will probably be one of those who will never be off medicine. It is very scary to deal with and you are lucky he did not have any weapons handy or see you and your aunt as working for the mafia.

As for Doctors they hand out drugs like candy. I told my general practitioner doctor that I had less energy then normal and asked her if she had any recommendations, me thinking diet changes or even vitamins... She was thinking hard core anti depressants. She did not tell me that she was prescribing me a high dosage of hard core anti depressants, she said it was a low dosage of a mild anti depressant but that it had other properties that increased energy. I have a friend who was suicidal and a little psychotic (bad ex wife issues) at the time, he told me that he was on the same medicines and that the dose this woman gave me was twice his. I never saw her again and after reading the personal, judgmental comments she wrote on my medical files I hope she is disbarred one day. However the manufacture of the drug is being sued for getting doctors to promote the drug for other conditions then what it was made for but also to children when it was not rated for use in children. A GP should never be allowed to prescribe medicine for psychological treatment, there are specialist (you know psychologist) in that area and they should know the mental interactions better. Normally the drugs this woman gave me would be prescribed in a institution to make sure that I could still function (breath) on them. I never took the drugs, I don't trust doctors and I look up every medicine they give me before taking them. After I told one Doctor's nurse (the DR could not be bothers to see a new patient) I was allergic to a medicine and she decide I didn't know what I was talking about and prescribed me something with that in it, I kind of have to.

Most meds that involve the brain involve suppressing or increasing the production of something in the brain. We are nowhere near mastering this and they is why people are affected so poorly by them. We need a precise balance of chemicals in our brain to function, you mess with that not having the ability to be precise there will be a negative response. The Brain is so very delicate and it also is adaptable and that can also cause issues.

good thing they have gun control in China.

"Chemical imbalance" as it is often called, is only a theory, and it is a disputed one, which actually has little to back it up. Pharmecuetical companies have spent a lot of money and time to push this concept, but it's really not backed up scientifically with much fact. So, when it works, it's great, the problem is, it's just a stab in the dark and many drugs have been shown to worsen conditions as often as they help..... Truth is, they don't really know exactly whats going on that it causing people's mental problems - they have seen structural problems in some people, but in others, none - thats where the idea of chemical imbalance comes in. They figure if they can't see a problem, it must be a "chemical" problem. Unfortunately, it is most likely more complicated than that, and it can make people who don't respond more dispondent when they don't understand that drug treatment is kind of random in its efficacy, and does not work for many people.
