Coop idea??

Hi everyone, new on the forum here and new to chickens. Just bought a few chickens and am looking for a coop. I have an old brick out building on the property that I'm wondering if I could convert to a coop. The birds will be free ranging all day and in the coop when they feel like it. I would prefer not to buy a prefab kit. What's everyone's thoughts on turning this building into a coop?

Sounds good; its pretty predator proof. You may want to fix it up a bit first before you put your chickens in it. The only thing I would worry about is them getting enough ventilation. Welcome to BYC!

Thanks everyone, the group seems very full of knowledgeable people. I am going to be replacing the roof this weekend providing the weather corporates. Any suggestions on the addition of some ventilation?

Is it possible to knock out a few bricks and make some windows?

Is your climate mild enough that you can replace the door with a "screen" (HW cloth) door?

Also, when you replace the roof go overboard with the roof vents.

If you knock out some bricks, cover the holes with wire mesh. That will provide good protection and ventilation.

Make roof with good big overhangs, leave the soffit open but cover with 1/2" Hardware Cloth. See My Coop for example.

How big is that building?
Looks like it might have been a well house.
Or a Brick Sh!thouse...haha!!

Adding some window would definitely be beneficial, hope you've got the tools and skills to cut thru that brick.
