How many do I need to start a colony?

Most exotic pet stores and local pet stores that sell lizards will carry them.

For way too much money and they’re not good quality breeders. It’s like buying chickens from a hatchery, they’re great for laying eggs and meat, but not for breeders. You want to find someone who takes care in their roaches. Pet stores unfortunately do not have great quality roaches.

How many do I need to start a colony?

I did 10 females and 4 males at first then I added 10 more females. It took them about a month to start having offspring. Now I have about 1000 (almost a year later) and I am constantly using them for treats or live feeders.

You want to start off with more than I did. I just started slow because I was working on so many other things at the time.

I switched the bin the roaches are in because they weren’t liking the clear bins. They enjoy the new HUGE bin. We have A LOT of roaches now and breeding has been very successful. We are averaging about 100+ offspring every month. They replenish fast which is nice.

No they need a heat mat. A heat lamp would get way too hot for them

They do not smell either like crickets do. Even with a huge colony. I have about 1,000 at this point but I am going to freeze a bunch for the chickens this weekend.
