Keep in mind they recommend 20% protien minimum in the article, and tbat was 40 years ago when jumbo coturnix didnt even exist.

I dont just make this stuff up and i didnt hear it from pa kettle on his little quail farm. As far as hatching 20k chicks, ive easily hatched that many in the last few years. It doesnt impress me.
OK so 20% is about the way to go for the best production but unless I missed it I didn't see anything saying 2% less protien would damage an adult quails organ development or shorten its life span. But I might still add some extra protien to see if they do lay better.
 
There are a couple dozen other things in feed aside from protein. Infused calcium is much higher in layer than in gbf. Roosters cannot process calcium well and some hens dont need as much as others. Extra calcium ends up as deposits in their kidneys=organ damage.
