How many chickens will fit?

They seem to do fine. The heat lamp is low, over one of the waterers, so the light shines down. Heat rises, so having one eight feet up in the air isn't helpful anyway. If you use one, be VERY careful about fire safety. Mary

yeah I would be scared the fire hazarded. are there any certain cold hardy breeds that would work great as pets?

Belgian d'Uccles, bantam Cochins, bantam Brahmas for sure. Maybe many other bantam types too. Large breed Cochins, Speckled Sussex, Jersey Giants, many individuals of the quieter breeds that look interesting to you. Mary

I have 10 right now, have had as many as 18, this is 12 x 8 including the hen house and at 18 it was a bit crowded to say the least.

Barely. Would they be in the coop just at night and free ranging otherwise or with a large run (At least 200 square feet)? 16 would be a better maximum.
