How to heat a 5 gal nipple waterer

I was going to grab the heated Premier one nipple waterer but hoping to find a larger option and build one with a 5 gallon.

Will a deicer ring melt the plastic inside?

Will the silver heater ring base for underneath I've seen on websites melt it?

What's the best way to heat these safely?

Would like a better longer running solution snow and ice are coming and cleaning the ones I have is going to be a pain.

You'll need to find a deicer that's rated for use in plastic.

I have no personal experience with it because I live where it only rarely freezes.

Whatever option you use, be sure to have a lid and some type of water-resistant insulation wrap to minimize heat loss and electricity used.

Whoops! 500 watt deicers for 30 gallon tanks is the smallest for my temp zone. Way too much power yikes for my 5 gallon waterer.

They also have a "bucket" deicer. Not sure what the difference is, but it has a different table that indicates 250 watts is fine for your area. Check it out.

I use this deicer in a 14 gallon plastic tote with horizontal nipples. Has kept the water thawed down to -26 F. It can be used in plastic container.

I use a cookie tin water heater for my 5 gallon nipple bucket. Works great for me, even during snowmageddon until the bulb went out. Depending on your area, you may need a higher wattage bulb. I plug it into my thermo cube plug and I'm set for winter.
