in your experience when do these breeds begin laying?

Welsummers and marans. Should I locate chicks now for spring eggs or should I be looking for pullets? Also at what age would they be allowed to be outside without a heat source. I'm in ohio, right now it is 15degrees out.

if you get peeps they would not lay till june most breeds dont start laying till they are 6 months old so i would get pullets if ya want eggs in the spring.Peeps can go outside after they are 8 to 10 weeks old or fully feathered

Both those will probably be in the 24-28 week old range when start laying. That puts you between the end of June and the end of July if you get them by New Years. That also means they will go outside about march 15th (again if you got them on New Years)
