Sounds to me like they found a place to get outside the fence & couldn't find their way back in; chickens aren't exactly the brightest bulbs on the tree. I'd check the fence pretty closely.

The fence is wide open, and has two "chick only" entrances. My guess is that the adults were showing them who was boss. The ducks are boss over the chickens. Apparently, they didn't care that the nest box was full of chicks until this morning.

I assume. I haven't been able to count them since I collected them to put them outside. Can you seriously count chicks while they're running around?

I've had to count the chickens 5 times before, and chicks are much quicker and harder to count, but I would probably stand there an hour trying lol.
