Lakenvelders

I've got my first golden lakenvelders growing in my incubator at the moment! Super excited! Also have a batch of silver eggs on the way for a friend that wants to use them for a project with his polish. Are there any good breeds to cross with lakenvelders to give them more genetic diversity?

I got her from mypetchicken.com in a mixed breed pack. She's about 13-14 weeks in this pic.

We received a Lakenvelder as an extra from McMurray hatchery, as others have. We feel the same, STUNNING BIRD! And so sweet we named him Frais(we pronounce it Fraya, but we believe it means sweet in French)...Every day I'm home, I spend time, sitting on stool, in a coop that houses our Polish, Sultans and Frais...Within 30 seconds, this is where he is:

What's funny is he will climb up my back, not jump on my legs to arm then shoulders like the rest(he also doesn't crap on me like the rest!)...And if I don't sit down by the time he gets to me, that doesn't stop him, he can climb all the way up me and lay on my shoulder, he's my Patriot Parrot! ;-)

He roo'd for the first time 2 days ago!

I saw your post and it seems you are local yo me. If you don't mind me asking, what breeds do you have and are you selling any hatching eggs or chicks this year? I'm in El Dorado, CA. Thank!

Another McMurray freebie Lakenvelder cockerel here.

When I found out what he was and read the bad-roo stories, I made sure to handle him A LOT. He's pretty friendly--so far. Follows me around the run to see what I've got and is curious about everything. Usually one of the first chicks to try new foods, right behind one of the turkens. Very watchful. And a little micromanager. Won't lie down for his nap until he's made sure the coast is clear for his girls. If one of them is taking too long getting into the coop at night, he'll hop down and give her an escort.

He's ten weeks old now and started crowing this week. Sounded like a kazoo at first, but he mastered it pretty quick. His comb, wattles, and ears have all come in very quickly, too. Will keep working with him to see if we can avoid aggressive tendencies as he gets older. kyexotics, your wonderful photo gives me some hope in that regard. (Wondering if maybe I can get some Turkenvelders out of him eventually. Do Lakenvelders make good dads?)

This isn't a breed I would have picked out on my own, but our Moonlight is definitely turning into a beautiful little guy with a whole lot of character.

Three-day-old Moonlight (with Blue the turken):

My Lakenvelders are late for this time of the year so they will spend a comfortable winter in the house. They are about 8 weeks right now. Here is a picture of my roo, Bruce Henner.
