My favorite standard chicken breed is the Black Australorp because they are very hardy, friendly and docile birds, and great layers of large, brown eggs. I have had many of them and never had a bad one. I also like Black Sex Links just as well for the same reasons, but they actually hybrids (RIR x BR) and not actually breeds.

Love this thread! Right now my favorite breed is the Silver Spangled Hamburg.

Admittedly, they are the ones we have the most experience with, we have 13 pullets and a cockerel that are all about 10 1/2 months old and have been raised from day old chicks together. They are so smart and yes, they are very flighty, but that is their nature. They are also very sweet and happy to follow me around if I have treats in my pocket (like all other chickens). I love everything about them. They aren't for everybody, but they fit here perfectly!
