My chickens won't sleep in the coop

I've noticed my chickens never sleep in the coop. Should I make them? Or just let them sleep where they want? They are free ranging in my backyard. I just let them go wherever they want. They go Into the coops during the day but at night they always sleep on my back steps or under a table.

From a predator safety standpoint I would make them sleep in a secure coop.

When you first put them outside / first got them, did you lock them in the coop for a few days to home them to it?

For safety, it's best they use the coop. But you have to train them to it, they don't naturally coop themselves without being shown how to use it, either by a human or older birds.

How devastated will you be if you lose one or all of them to predation?

Is it to hot, not well enuf ventilated, or to dark for them to go inside the coop?
