Hi! This is my first post on backyard chicken. We have seven chickens and my kids have named all of them. They are basically our pets. One of my daughters who is 11 years old loves them so much and is pretty much the only one who takes care of them. She noticed that Daisy was not using one of her legs and would pretty much just stay in the coop lying down away from the others. We thought maybe she sprained it. So, I told my daughter to give it a couple of days and see if she starts using it again. She made sure that she brought food and water to her. After about day 2 or 3 of still not using her leg, we noticed that she had open wounds on her leg with part of the wound appearing black. We started applying ant-biotic ointment twice a day. Her foot on that side was also very swollen and warm to the touch compared to the other leg. I was assuming her whole leg was becoming infected. So, I got some chicken oral anti-biotics yesterday. I mixed it with water and poured it on some bread and she ate it. But, this morning her other leg has a fairly large black spot on it and also feels warm and looks swollen. This is scaring us and making me think that it is something more than just a cut that got infected. She also has a slight bit of black appearing on her comb that we had never noticed before all this began. What do you think is going on with her? And what can we do to help her? We moved her inside in a very large Rubbermaid tub to keep her from being harmed by the others and prevent her from getting frostbite outside because of being so dormant.
