We have 5 older girls from last year and a new group of 2 girls with one rooster we call Teeny (he isn't teeny any more, though he had been a smaller chick in the group). The younger group is about 7 months and have been laying eggs too. They are all Rhode Island Reds. An additional Speckled Sussex (who hasn't started laying yet as far as we can tell) joined our flock with the young ones this summer after repeatedly escaping from a neighbor who told us to just keep her. Teeny's mating antics have been hilariously entertaining as he tried to go after the big girls. I even watched one big girl run straight into him and knock him off as he attempted to balance on a different big girl. He lets the ladies eat first (usually) and allows us to pick him up and carry him around (thanks to the taming efforts of my 11 year old). However, he seems to be constantly trying to mount all the hens (successfully about 1/4 of the time maybe?). We've been separating the Speckled Sussex and the others seem able to hand it, but wow, it's a lot! How much is normal?
