Contest Details:

This is a contest to see who can create the best coop/run page for BYC. We define the "best page" to mean pages with the most information, pictures, plans, details, etc. that will be very helpful to others who want to build a coop and/or run. We don't care if your coop was made out of recycled pallets and was made in 2 days, or if it was made out of the highest grade materials, took 5 months, and is a scale model of the Taj Mahal. We want helpful and informative pages!

Prizes:

First place: The first place winners (at least 2) of the contest will get a $50 Gift Certificate for the BYC Store!
Second place: The second place winner (at least 2) of the contest will get a $20 Gift Certificate for the BYC Store!.

You'll be using the BYC Page & Article Creation Tool to design your pages and creating a page here:https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coop_Designs

Deadline: The deadline will be based on the number of submissions we receive and how quickly we get them. Usually we wait for at least 20 - 30 submissions. Once we get "enough" we'll give everyone at least 1 week notice before the contest ends so they can put final touches on their submissions.

Things to include in your page:

  1. Start with a finished coop/run picture at the top of your page
  2. Have a write-up of how you built your coop/run. Include any information you think would be helpful to other people who may want to build something similar. If you are unsure how to create a page, see our Coop pages and member pages tutorial here.
  3. If you have them, include designs & plans you used to build your coop/run.
  4. Pictures of your coop/run as it was being constructed.
  5. Finished pictures of your coop/run.
  6. A list of things you want to change or add to your coop/run.
  7. Additional information about what you learned, what you'd do differently the next time, and any other tips for potential coop builders.
To increase your chances of winning the contest, make sure it has as many of the elements above in as much detail as possible! Here are some additional hints to help you win the contest:

1. Follow the format of some of the existing coop pages.
2. The more details and pictures the better!
3. Plans plans plans. Very few coop designs have plans available. If you post plans (rough or detailed) of your coop you'll get bonus points for sure!
4. Pictures - We all love lots of big beautiful and helpful pictures!
5. Remember, this is a contest for the most helpful coop build page and not the best looking coop.

IMPORTANT RULE: ALL pictures MUST be uploaded to BYC and not hosted on other sites like Photobucket, personal websites, etc.

We expect to add all of the pages submitted to the coop design page of BYC, but the best will win the contest.

TO ENTER THE CONTEST:

  1. Navigate to the "coop designs" section of the site.
  2. Scroll below the thumbnails of coops and to the middle left of the page you will see a button for "Add a Coop Design" Click that button and give the page a title.
  3. Create a very helpful page with lots of pictures and information.
  4. Reply to this thread with a link to your coop page you created.
  5. Have Fun!
NOTE: If you're one of those modest types and want to add your coop to the site but don't want to enter the contest, that is fine. We'd still love to have your pictures posted to a BYC page and a link to your page posted in this thread... the more coop designs the better!

To get your coop page on the Index of coops pages of BYC:

1) Create a coop page following the steps above.
2) Reply to this thread with a link to your coop page.
3) Wait for the contest to end.

Please keep in mind that adding coops to our coop index is a long and manual process, so we tend to do them all at once and at the end of the contest.

We look forward to seeing your coop pages, pictures, and information!!

Time-traveling couple with 'historical coop' in New Hampshire!

Hi! We live in NEW HAMPSHIRE~
We are historical reenactors living in a little 240 yr. old house that has been a DIY labor of love to restore for over 17 years. We JUST got chickens for the first time---4 English buff orpingtons, and put up a coop. Always on a tight budget, we do pretty much everything ourselves and have a lot of fun working on our various projects! We had just finished building our own fence of trees we cut down, and had 'tricked out' our purchased coop with period style hardware, 'leaded' windows we did ourselves, and a few other things such as swing-out branch perches we designed and built from branches. Now the coop area blends in nicely with our old New Hampshire house.
My husband thought our fence was reminiscent of the stockade fences at Plimoth Plantation or Jamestown, etc., We had a salvaged-for-free piece of highly-weathered 18thc. board, and a 17thc. 'Brit' flag---since we do that type of reenacting. Hubby has a degree in illustration and design, and is creative and quirky. He said the fence reminded him of an "old fort"...SO...what did we do???
Well, created one, of course! We made our flag pole from a tree we cut down, and hubby hand-painted 'FORT ORPINGTON' in a 17thc. font on the old board, which we affixed to the fence around our coop and run! We think it looks just grand with our 18th century home and fits with the old-time lifestyle we live---(Yes, that is us in the avatar photo, and below in this post!)
You can see our old house and much more about the coop and hens here:

*** JUNE 6---THANK YOU TO BYC for putting our coop photos on FACEBOOK. We are not Facebook members, but someone left a comment saying our coop was too close to the house and what about rodents and pests. In the first place, that is NOT THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE; it is the large, original attached post and beam woodshed. In the second place, I clean our coop/run every single day.

RE: OUR 'FORT ORPINGTON' COOP/RUN~
I FORGOT TO ADD PHOTOS OF A FEW THINGS THAT HUBBY CAME UP WITH THAT PERSONALIZED OUR COOP SUCH AS PHOTOS OF THE SWING-OVER PERCH HE DESIGNED SO WE WOULDN'T HAVE TO PLAY 'LIMBO' WHEN CLEANING THE RUN, LOL!

I leaded the coop windows and Adam trimmed~

Although our coop has a nice window screen, we were afraid it might not be 'predator-proof' enough...
Adam designed and made this interior screen that fits behind the regular window screen and slides from side to side, out of durable hardware cloth and stuff we had in the shed, and made the wooden turnbuckles that keep it in place.
Great job, honey~

...The little night light inside the coop that lures our girls in every evening. We are just using it to train them.

Inside of the run, Adam designed the neatest swing-out perch and made it from a maple branch...
So great, Adam~

Because it is low for us and we'd have to duck down every time we were cleaning the run, he came up with an ingenious way to latch it into place on one end, and he has an iron 'butterfly' hinge on the other end...
For cleaning the run we unlatch and swing the perch over to the opposite side wall where it sits on it's own bracket. We just swing it back and latch it into place when we're through!

Pictures of our Chicken Coop Tree House. The birds love it! Our own design inspired by Pete Nelson, Tree House Master.

I will try not be long winded, the coop started as a dream to have some chickens, I looked at the Amish chicken coops and said I could build that. I drew up a set up plans and it just got bigger and bigger by the time I was done it had electricity, running water, tv, covered porch. Then we started on the run, decided it should be covered to protect them from predators, although they spend most of their time free ranging. The run also has a compost pile and a water system. The reason for the TV (everyone asks) when they were chicks and ducklings they were in my daughters room who liked to fall asleep to the tv so when the tv would come on, they would all quiet down and watch it. To this day when the tv comes on they all go to their spots and watch chicken run. My future plans (this year) I am planning on putting an addition on for feed and extra supplies, I also am adding a second section to the run in case any of the birds need to be quarantined.
